Full name: Alexander Isayevich Solzhenitsyn
Noted For: Soviet dissident and author. Political prisoner in the Soviet Union (1945-53), exiled to Siberia (1953-56). Works include One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (1962) and The Gulag Archipelago (1973). Banished from the Soviet Union (1974), he lived in the United States until the fall of the U.S.S.R. and then returned to Russia (1994).
