Noted For: chess player; defeated Anatoly Karpov at age 22 and became the youngest world chess champion (1985). Was World Chess Federation (FIDE) champion from 1985-93. Broke from FIDE and formed the rival Professional Chess Association, arranged a world championship match and defeated Nigel Short (1993). PCA champion (1993-2000). Beat IBM's supercomputer "Deep Blue" (1996) but lost in a rematch (1997).
