Drove his car into a lake and swam to safety while his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne, drowned; and also failed to report the accident to the police until 10 hours later (7/19/1969). Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2009). Brother of John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy.
